The U.N. Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO)’s report highlights the urgent necessity to restore Africa’s degraded landscape. This is due to Desertification which affects 45 per cent of Africa’s land area. Desertification, the process by which land turns into a desert threatens human subsistence. Not only are natural resources including food and water more difficult to obtain but its long-term impact causes harm to human economies. What is believed to be a viable solution is to scale-up efforts in forest and landscape restoration.
The Great Green Wall project is a proposal that aims to fight desertification and its effects by planting an extremely long wall of trees that spans the width of the continent. With desertification being Africa’s long-term threat and environmental sustainability being core to what Excellerent always does, the Excellerent team in Ethiopia wished to play its part in tackling the crisis.
To create a meaningful impact, a group of about 40 volunteers actively participated in the Great Green Wall project in July 2020 and enjoyed a day of tree-planting. This commitment to do the right thing isn’t a one-off event. We are passionate about environmental issues, and as in the past we will continue to invest more efforts to protect our planet, so that the world can see a better tomorrow.
